Sometimes things kind of fall into our laps, especially as they relate to Andrea. There have been a number of times when things just kind of…happen. I think she’s magical. Especially when it has to do with things she takes an unusual interest in.
She has only been cosplaying for a little over a year now, really. Her third costume ever was this one.
This is the Ciel Phantomhive dress that she made herself. When she was getting ready to go to the con where she debuted this cosplay, we took this picture in the driveway to show our friends on facebook the results of her hard work.
What happened next was completely unexpected.
One of Jason’s friends from high school is a professional photographer. When she saw Andrea’s picture in her newsfeed, she asked if she could invite her in for a photo shoot. She submits photos to contests, and was looking for something different to shoot for an upcoming contest. Imagine my surprise when I asked Andrea if she wanted to do it and she said yes. We took both Ciel cosplay pieces to the photo shoot.
Lisa at Tangerine House of Design treated Andrea like a rock star. Rock. Star. She had a ball and the pictures turned out amazing.
The best part of this is that she now has photos for her design portfolio to show how her costume design and sewing skills have grown and improved. When she gets ready to start applying for colleges (and, hopefully, scholarships), she can use these to get into a good costume or fashion design program.
While she’s not at the level of Yaya Han, these pictures definitely go a long way to pointing to this being the beginnings of a long future in professional cosplay. It’s such an adventure to see where she’ll end up on this amazing road she’s on.
And coolest of all, the picture that Lisa submitted to the contest ended up winning third place in the portrait category.
So that’s the most recent adventure with my amazing kid. Next week, you’ll get to see the traumatic adventure we had last weekend. Which, believe it or not, we can still link back to anime. Not directly, but hint- all roads lead to Chuck Huber. Or Dr. Stein. One and the same.
